Show History:

The Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show was founded in 1993 by Kerry Vincent and Maxine Boyington.   Originally held inside the Prominade Mall in Tulsa, OK, and in 1997 moved to its current venue inside the main building of the Tulsa State Fairgrounds.  The OSSAS draws competitors from all over the United States (and beyond) and is annually viewed by tens of thousands of Tulsa State Fair visitors.  With over 240 entries in 2003, our show has evolved into one of the nations largest and most prestigious sugar art competitions and is covered by numerous local, state, national, and international media and publications. In 2003, we were filmed by The Food Network which will air a one-hour special sometime in the first half of 2004.

The Competition:

The OSSAS consists of two competitions.  The Divisional Competition is separated by age (Junior and Teen Divisions) or skill level (from Adult Beginner to Master).  The National Wedding Competition is open to competitors of all skill levels over 18 years of age.

Entrants in the Divisional competitions vie for ribbons and qualify for thousands of dollars in door prizes, including cash, decorating equipment, and scholarships to classes from some of the worlds finest instructors.

Entrants in the National Wedding Competition contend for medals, higher end decorating equipment, substantial cash awards, and more.  The top six (6) winning cakes are photographed for submission to bridal and cake magazines around the world.

Our show also features a Peoples Choice award.  Visitors to the state fair vote by donating money to the entry of their choice.  100% of the monies raised in the Peoples Choice competition are donated to Angel Flight.

The 2003 National Wedding Competition grew to 39 entries.  Each entrant was required to create a masterpiece and full table display to coordinate with a piece of China of their own choosing.  The judges awarded 5 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals in 2003.  A full catalog of these amazing creations, along with full table photos and closeups of cake details is available here.

Celebrity Demonstrators:

Each year the show highlights celebrity demonstrators and respected teachers.  For the 2004 OSSAS, we proudly welcome Nicholas Lodge and Ron Ben-Israel as our celebrity demonstrators.  We will have more information about these exciting visitors soon.
